How to get a driving licence

Obtaining a driving licence in Switzerland depends on your existing driving licence category, of course; in this example, the process is shown without an existing driving licence category. The first step is to attend a first-aid course, which will teach you important first-aid skills.

An eye test with a recognised optician or ophthalmologist is required to ensure that you have the necessary visual capacity.

After the eye test, you’ll need to register for the theory test. This tests your knowledge of traffic rules and signs.

After passing the theory test, you will receive a provisional driving licence, which allows you to ride a motorcycle under certain conditions.

You will need to take a beginners’ course to learn the basics of riding a motorcycle. This course usually lasts 12 hours.

Traffic safety is another important course that will help you better understand traffic situations and drive safely.

With your provisional licence, you can now take riding lessons and prepare for the practical test. This test is the last step towards obtaining your driving licence.
